Not knowing if she'd come back, Lucas tries to make the best of things and grows closer to the girl he once had a fling with. The two blondes decide to give it a real try this time and they have been dating for a few months now. Brooke Davis is the girl that Lucas confessed his feelings to, but she left for California anyway. When she gets back, she learns that her best friend and ex-boyfriend are now dating, and she has no other choice but to accept it. But being in California made Brooke discover a secret about herself...
Brooke decides not to tell anyone, but will she get pushed to the part where she has no other choice but to spill? Then there's also the fact that she's failing calculus. Lucas, good friend that he is, offers Brooke his help, and she accepts Lucas as her tutor. The spark between Lucas and Brooke is still there and very obvious during their tutoring sessions. Lucas still wants Brooke back secretly and he's about to break up with his girlfriend Peyton Sawyer when Peyton tells him she's pregnant by him. Lucas is speechless, but doesn't want to be like his dad. The broody blonde decides to stick by Peyton and their unborn child and be a good dad, this ruining the reunion between Lucas and Brooke.
But even Peyton isn't sure if the baby is Lucas' child, because she has been seeing her ex-boyfriend behind Lucas' back. Yes, it's true, Peyton is having a secret affair with Jake Jagielski, who came back to town during the summer. The two have been sneaking around for weeks, if not months. This means that Jake could very well be the daddy, instead of Lucas. However, Peyton does not tell Lucas about her infidelity and keeps him under the illusion that it's his baby. Peyton, not knowing what to do, turns to Haley James, who came home from her tour recently and tells her everything, making her promise not to tell Lucas about it.
Haley focuses on her tutoring, since that's all she has left now. But then, her ex-husband comes to her for help with tutoring. He's having trouble with history, and he got Haley assigned as tutor, not even by choice. At first, both refuse, but Haley convinces her ex to stay. That ex being Nathan Scott of course. He's a married man again and even a daddy! But deep down, he still loves Haley. Kayla Brody Scott is Nathan's new wife and the total opposite of Haley. She's the town's latest bitch and likes to manipulate. She and Nathan have a son named Riley, who was born not too long ago.
What Nathan doesn't know though is that Riley isn't his son. Back when Kayla met Nathan, she was still dealing with her ex-boyfriend and slept together while she was with Nathan. When Nathan finds out that his marriage has been based on a lie, he wants to file for divorce, but Kayla won't let him get off that easy. She blames Haley for it all, and goes to the highschool with a gun. When everyone runs out of the building, Haley is in the tutor center with Peyton, and when they try to leave, Kayla finds them in the hallway. She holds Haley hostage, and Peyton manages to tell Nathan.
When Nathan goes back inside to look for her, he tries to calm Kayla down. Eventually, Kayla is caught off guard and Haley manages to escape. Brooke, who was in the gym, hears the yelling in the halls and goes to see what's happening. Now Kayla points the gun at Nathan, and Brooke sees it. She pushes Nathan aside and the bullet hits her instead of him. Lucas, who heard the gunshot, goes back inside to look for Brooke and finds her bleeding on the ground while Nathan manages to get the gun away from Kayla.
Meanwhile, in the hospital, Haley and Nathan stay by Brooke's side and grow closer again, while Lucas won't even look at Peyton and Jake, not to mention he's mad at Haley when he finds out she knew about it the whole time and didn't tell him. Peyton and Jake don't get why Lucas is mad, but they find out at the hospital. Turns out that Lucas caught Peyton and Jake on her webcam...
